The symmetrical façade looks over a fountain and lawns, the double-height lobby is marble beneath a crystal chandelier, and the rooms have tall windows, chandeliers and patterned rugs on dark herringbone floors. Common questions

Staying at Sofitel Legend People's Grand Xi'an

01 Where is Sofitel Legend People's Grand Xi'an and how do I get there?

It's inside Xi'an's Ming city walls, set in the gardens of the People's Grand compound. The Bell and Drum Towers are about 15 minutes on foot and the Muslim Quarter about 25, so the heart of the old city and its evening food streets are within walking distance. Your driver brings you in from the station or the airport.

02 Is this the same hotel as the Sofitel on Renmin Square?

No. Both sit in the grounds of the People's Grand compound, but they are separate hotels. The Legend is the 1953 People's Grand Hotel building itself, restored as Sofitel's heritage tier, while Sofitel Xi'an on Renmin Square is the garden hotel elsewhere in the same grounds. On our journeys we book the Legend, for the historic building.

03 Who is this stay best for?

Travellers who want Xi'an's history in the building as well as on the itinerary — a 1950s state guesthouse with its marble lobby and gardens, inside the walls and a walk from the Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter — with Sofitel polish to go with it. It's one of the stays on our Classic China: Warriors, Pandas & Stone Pillars and Classic China journeys.
