Unhurried private journeys
Tea mountains, old towns and river valleys — with your own guide and driver, and a pace you set.
Boutique China's unhurried private journeys suit retirees and anyone who'd rather see less and experience more — two to eight travellers, a private guide and driver, and days paced around you. Easy routes like the Jingmai Tea Tasting Tour (gentle pace, no early starts, no real hikes), Soulful Side of Yunnan and Guilin keep walking light and altitude sensible, with comfortable boutique stays throughout. The Jingmai tea journey starts from about A$2,400 per person, twin share.
Retirement is often when the long-promised trip finally happens. Travelling privately, the day follows your pace, the walking stays gentle, and there's always time for another pot of tea.

We've traveled extensively, but this was our first time truly 'slowing down' to find the soul of a place. After browsing their unique list of destinations, we chose the ancient tea forests of Jingmai Mountain. The experience was profound — drinking tea with local Blang families in their stilted homes felt like stepping back in time, yet we never lacked for modern luxury.
We were initially hesitant about rural travel at our age, but the seamless logistics were a revelation. Their bespoke itineraries strike the perfect balance between cultural depth and absolute comfort. Spending the afternoon exploring the 128-year-old courtyards in Weishan and retiring to a stunning boutique hotel was a highlight of our year.
Why private works for an unhurried trip
-
No rush, by design
Our easy routes are built at a gentle pace — the Jingmai tea tour has no early starts and no real hikes, and its longest walk is a slow three-to-four-hour village circuit.
-
Sensible altitude
Parts of Yunnan and Sichuan sit high on the plateau. For an unhurried trip we favour lower regions — Xishuangbanna, the Jingmai tea mountain at around 1,500 m, Guilin — and build in acclimatisation wherever a route does climb.
-
The logistics disappear
Boutique stays we know personally, a private vehicle between them and a guide who handles tickets, timing and translation — so each day is simply yours.
-
Culture that rewards lingering
Tea tastings with village hosts, the old towns of Dali and Weishan, rivers and rice terraces — experiences made for slowing down, not ticking off.
Easy-paced starting points
Every route is built from scratch — these are starting points to react to, not fixed packages.

Before you plan
01 How much walking is involved?
On our easy routes, not much. The Jingmai Tea Tasting Tour has no real hikes — its longest walk is a slow three-to-four-hour village circuit — and any private trip can be shaped around the walking your party is comfortable with.
02 Is altitude a concern?
It can be on the high plateau routes. For an unhurried trip we favour lower regions — Xishuangbanna, the Jingmai tea mountain at around 1,500 m, and Guilin — and where a route does climb, we build in acclimatisation. Tell us about any health considerations when you enquire.
03 Can you plan around mobility needs?
Tell us about any mobility needs when you enquire. With a private vehicle and guide throughout, we can plan stays, transfers and sightseeing around them.
04 How long should an unhurried trip be?
Our private journeys run 7 to 25 days, and at a slow pace two to three weeks lets you stay longer in fewer places. For a first trip, Soulful Side of Yunnan, which already builds in rest days, is an unhurried place to start, or Classic China for two easy weeks; the gentle five-day Jingmai and Guilin routes join onto a longer journey.
