Frequently asked questions
Everything first-time travellers usually want to know before we start planning — from visas and hotels to group sizes, sickness, and our booking process. Still unsure? Ask us directly.
01 How is Boutique China different?
We specialise in ultra-personalised, high-end journeys that deliberately bypass mass tourism. Our itineraries provide privileged access to lesser-known destinations and private stays in independent luxury houses and design-led retreats — Hylla, VipaXana, Songtsam and their peers — selected for their architectural integrity, intimacy, and sense of place.
02 Where can we meet to plan my trip?
We operate as a Mobile Luxury Consultancy to serve clients Australia-wide. We bring our expertise to you—whether via a private video conference or meeting for a coffee at a local cafe to suit your schedule.
03 Do Australians need a visa for China in 2026?
No. Australian passport holders currently enjoy visa-free entry for up to 30 days. For longer stays, our team provides full concierge support for your application.
04 What is your standard for hotels?
Our default is independent, owner-operated houses — living museums with a real sense of place, chosen for architecture, intimacy and character over generic chains. In the big cities, where no boutique equal exists, we place you in the best house available — a Waldorf Astoria on the Bund, a Mandarin Oriental by the Forbidden City — and tell you exactly why.
05 Can I customise an itinerary?
Always. Every journey on our site is a "canvas." Because we work directly with local partners, we can adjust every detail—from the pace of travel to private architecture or tea-master sessions.
06 Do you serve international clients and offer non-English speaking guides?
Yes. While based in Melbourne, we serve a global clientele. To ensure a seamless experience, we provide professional guides fluent in French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. Furthermore, citizens of France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal currently enjoy 30-day visa-free entry to China until 31 December 2026.
07 How do I navigate if I don’t speak Mandarin?
You will be accompanied by professional, fluent English-speaking local guides. They act as "cultural bridges," granting you access to people and places hidden from the average traveller.
08 What are your typical group sizes?
Our private journeys are designed for parties of 2 to 8 travelling together — couples (including honeymoons and milestone trips), families and multi-generational groups, friends, and retirees who want an unhurried pace. The guide, driver and vehicle are private to your party, so their cost is shared — which is why private travel is best value from two travellers up. For families we also design "soft-adventure" itineraries — see Family Holidays.
09 Can I travel with you solo?
Yes — but on a fully private trip one traveller carries the whole cost of the guide, driver and vehicle. Most solo travellers are better suited to our small-group departures with Little Chinese Everywhere: fixed dates, groups of up to 8, boutique stays and an English-speaking guide, from US$2,390. If you'd still prefer a private trip on your own dates, tell us and we'll quote it.
10 How long are your trips?
Our private journeys run 7 to 25 days. About 7 to 12 days covers one region at an unhurried pace; ten to fourteen allows a longer arc through northern Yunnan, the Sichuan plateau or the Classic China circuit; and with three weeks or more we join two routes into one journey — northern Yunnan with the Jingmai tea mountains, say, or Classic China followed by Yunnan. See our itineraries by trip length.
11 How is my privacy and safety managed?
Discretion is a hallmark of our service. We use vetted private transfers and provide 24/7 support throughout your entire journey.
12 What happens if I get sick while in China?
You are never alone. For minor concerns, your private guide will immediately coordinate with reputable local pharmacies or premium hotel-level medical support. In the event of something more serious, our team provides 24/7 assistance to secure priority access to international-standard hospitals or private VIP wards.
13 What is the first step?
It begins with a conversation. We take the time to uncover not just where you want to go, but how you want to feel when you arrive. Contact us to schedule your discovery call.
